SEP 2024 - Yvette Meijer

On September 28th, the green healthcare festival named "Groene Zorg Festival 2024" was held by Groene Zorg Alliantie in Hilversum, The Netherlands. During this festival SPARCOS facilitated a workshop about reduction of medicine wastage. In this interactive workshop, over 60 participants  from the field of Dutch healthcare (from hospitals, health care institutions, pharmacies, health insurance, government and more) expressed what is on their mind when we speak about medicine wastage. 

They decided together on the most important causes for medicine wastage, including redistribution, contents of emergency stock, medication reviews, number of dose units per package, prescription cascades, patient name-based distribution and storage in hospitals and health care institutions and as-needed medication. 

We dove deeper into the top 4 causes of medicine wastage as defined during the workshop. By asking the question "How might we....?", the participants shared their ideas and insights to inspire their peers to reduce medicine wastage in their daily work environment.

We think safe redistribution of medicines in hospitals and care institutions is possible when a certification is put in place that is based on existing stability data provided by the manufacturer. A workshop was held with a diverse group of stakeholders to present the idea and to come up with solutions for any remaining hurdles.
